Offline reconstruction software for diamond sensors based on SAMPIC readout in the CMS-PPS detector at CERN laboratory

Description

This thesis seeks to describe the offline reconstruction software of the Diamond-SAMPIC readout, which was developed for the CMS-PPS detector at CERN. The work is focused on a specific detector type - Diamond timing detector, which is being used in the experiment for precise particle arrival time measurements. Timing is a vital component of the PPS system, which allows to match the tracks of scattered protons from the two arms and determine the common collision vertex. The SAMPIC is a fast sampler ASIC, which acts as a waveform digital converter by sampling the analog input. Even though SAMPIC readout is capable of conducting more precise measurements than the primary system (HPTDC), it is operating much slower due to the amount of samples it has to process. This limitation excludes SAMPIC from the possibility of being used as single-readout system during data-taking. Instead, both systems are going to operate in parallel, with SAMPIC readout connected only to a fraction of available channels. It will provide a high quality sample which could be then used for the purpose of further analysis and fine-tuning of the timing calibration. The produced software was integrated into existing framework and is expected to operate during 2022 LHC data acquisition.
