Description

In high energy physics, it is very interesting to study the scattering of vector bosons, as these processes are very rare and could be used to get more insight into the electroweak symmetry breaking and confirm the Standard Model or even discover physics beyond the Standard Model. One possibility to quantify physics beyond the Standard Model are effective field theories (EFTs), which introduce new interactions or modify existing ones. These EFTs use so-called Wilson coefficients as a parameter that characterizes the coupling strength of the added interaction. For these coefficients only lower and upper limits have been found. This thesis focuses on testing the agreement of the current limits of dim-8 EFT operators with the Standard Model using Monte Carlo simulations. This is done for the process of $WW\gamma\gamma$ vector boson scattering, by visually comparing the data for kinematic observables of the EFT operators and the Standard Model. All this is done considering the technical limitations of the ATLAS detector and LHC for the time of run 2 and a simple analysis of uncertainties.
