Description

This thesis describes a design specification for supporting and alignment systems of a linear particle collider. The Compact linear collider study at the European organization for nuclear research carried out by international collaborations aims at showing the feasibility of a multi TeV electron - positron linear collider with an acceleration gradient of 100 MV/m before year 2010. The accelerator units should be aligned within 14 μm at 1σ Furthermore, accelerator requires stabilization to nanometer level above four Hz for some components. This work aims at setting the baseline for the mechanical design of the complete supporting and alignment systems of the accelerator. The work consist of the background to the project, definition of the demanded requirements and an overview to theories, methodologies and methods of design. Following the selected method of Pahl & Beitz, a design specification was made including both a requirement list and a schematic layout for the supporting and alignment systems. The preliminary tolerance budgets were calculated for the obtained supporting structures. The accelerator was divided in modules, which should be assembled on the surface and afterwards transported into tunnel for final installation. The obtained tolerances were challenging, being often micron level requirements. Furthermore, a large number of structures constitute a challenge as well. However, this work can be used as a baseline and a platform for the future research and system design.
