Improvements in the Project Management Method used by the Fibre Optics and Cabling Section from CERN during the Long Shutdown 2

Description

Due to the workload increase expected at CERN for the Long Shutdown 1 (LS1), the Support unit was created inside the Fibre Optics and Cabling (FC) section with the purpose of backing the project managers on the development of their activities, while improving the project management system present in the section until that moment. The tools developed by the Support unit for the FC section since the beginning of the LS1 have been mostly oriented to the Monitoring step, leading to the creation of the FC Monitoring System (FCMS). The initial objectives of this system were to stablish a unified system to follow-up on the FC projects and to improve the treatment of the incoming data to obtain more precise information. During the LS2, a period in which the contributions of the author are framed, new objectives were considered. These new objectives were mainly: -Consolidation of the tools already developed -Development of new tools to visualize the data -Improve even more the data treatment to have information as accurate as possible about the projects (this objective was maintained) -Automate as possible the process that was already working The present document is divided into 3 main parts. 1. A first one (Introduction), introducing CERN and explaining the way in which the FC section is structured. 2. A second one (The project management in the FC section), describing how does the project management process take place in the FC section. 3. A third part showing the evolution of the FCMS since the LS1 (The FC monitoring system before the LS2) and focusing on the developments in which the author contributed during the LS2 (Developments in the FC monitoring system during the LS2). Finally, a point about the possible future developments of the FCMS is included.
